Neurodivergence-Affirming Online Therapy for Parents in Ann Arbor, MI & Statewide

Does this sound like you?

You've tried to be strong for so long, and it's just not sustainable anymore. You scroll online and all you can see is how perfect everyone else is and you can't even feel comfortable in your own skin.

It sort of feels like there’s something everyone else has, that you don’t have - an ability to move through the world and not be super affected by every little emotion, not have to see a sentimental commercial and immediately tear up, not have to go back and dissect every conversation to replay every way you may have messed it up or could be misunderstood… it’s exhausting. You've always had to dive deep on stuff, you just wish you had more balance with it.

As the emotions flood in, you don't trust your own barometer, since you've always been told to rein it in, it’s too much, you're too emotional…. But you also have this gift of noticing stuff no one else picks up on, and that’s really come in handy sometimes. You're tired of being told to dial it back. You don’t want to just numb it out either.

You know how you want to respond to a situation or a stress, and then when that moment comes, that version doesn’t show up. You're looking over your own shoulder thinking “what the hell are you doing? You know better than this!” but you can’t seem to do it any differently. Then the guilt and shame sets in afterward. You wish you didn’t have to do so much back-tracking and repairing after that happens. You don’t want to keep that cycle going, it’s so discouraging.

I’m Leah and I’m a Neurodivergent Therapist in Ann Arbor, MI

I help people to connect to the version of themselves that is best equipped to handle the intensity of life. Many of my clients are introverts, neurodivergent (ADHD, Autistic, Highly Sensitive People [HSPs]), “recovering yellers,” and/or noticing where perfectionism isn’t serving them anymore. Our work together can look like meeting various inner parts and exploring what’s been helpful about them and which parts need a new job; reflecting on questions designed to connect to strengths, resources, and hope; and exploring tools for getting the body involved so my clients’ stress can move through them instead of staying stuck inside.

I don’t want to position myself as the expert of my clients’ lives. Rather, I bring curiosity, years of practice asking questions, even more years of practice working to heal through my own anxiety and perfectionism, and I have a deep reverence for all that my clients have managed to make it through thus far.

I know some of what it takes to reach out for therapy; it’s hard to start with somebody new, and you may be thinking, “Is this all for nothing?” But my clients find that it helps for them to know that there’s a time and place with a dedicated hour out of their week where they can process their experience, swear as much as they want, find some humor, explore new perspectives, receive support when things are especially challenging, and go deeper on less eventful weeks.

I see you as so much more than any labels you may have acquired from the world or from yourself. I believe that there is so much going right about you that you may have never really seen. I believe that if you’ve gotten to the point of visiting this page and preparing to enter (or re-enter) counseling, then you are pretty seriously motivated and courageous, and those are some pretty amazing qualities and assets in this work.

Why work with me?

As a multiply-neurodivergent counselor trained in art therapy, I approach treatment a bit differently. You, as a whole person, are my priority.

Yes, problems and pain and symptoms exist— and they don’t get the whole focus. Alongside experiences of “this is what depression or anxiety or grief or fear or desperation or rage or executive dysfunction (etc) feels like,” our sessions will also focus on developing your firsthand experiences of growth, peace, flexibility, insight, courage, integrity, self-acceptance, and so many other qualities.

Because… self-understanding only goes so far without also learning how to really let ourselves find the good in ordinary moments. For many of us, we may not be used to feeling okay or feeling good— and we may even unknowingly shy away from or sabotage good times in order to protect ourselves from pain and disappointment.

In our work together, we will both face your challenges but also build your capacity to unflinchingly accept pleasurable experiences.
